Wenchang Pavilion

文昌阁

Standing as the spiritual heart of the Wenchang Palace complex, this multi-story pavilion was historically the most vibrant Taoist center in Ciqikou. Dedicated to the God of Literature, it served as a sacred gathering place for students and scholars praying for success in imperial exams. Its unique layout faces southeast toward the Jialing River, breaking traditional symmetry to embrace the local 'feng shui'.

💡Look for the unique orientation of the gates, which are intentionally tilted to face the river. It's an excellent spot to learn about the 'Nine Palaces and Eighteen Temples' that once defined Ciqikou's religious landscape.

Baoshan Palace

宝善宫

Originally a Taoist temple dedicated to the God of Medicine, this site also served as a primary school in the early 20th century. While it is architecturally significant as one of the 'Nine Palaces' of Ciqikou, it is now primarily used for commercial cultural performances and tea house activities.

💡The courtyard often hosts Sichuan Opera 'Face Changing' performances. It is a good place to sit and rest, provided you are aware of the service costs.
Ciqikou Back Street
Caution

Ciqikou Back Street

磁器口后街

A newly constructed commercial district adjacent to the traditional Ciqikou Old Town. While the architecture mimics ancient styles, it is essentially a modern commercial complex filled with chain brands, 'Internet-famous' shops, and large retail stores. Compared to the authentic atmosphere found past the main Old Town gate, this area offers a modern shopping experience with much less historical character.

💡Best suited for visitors looking for 'Instagrammable' photo spots and modern dining. If you seek the authentic 'Old Chongqing' vibe, head straight for Ciqikou Main Street or Horizontal Street.
